A new and bigger cafe/restaurant area between Pictureville Cinema and the rest of the Museum was an attraction, as was the more spacious, lighter, brighter and airier foyer.
Then on June 16, 1999, the result of an 16 million overhaul of the museum was revealed for all to see. The old museum, with its curved Portland Stone frontage, had been replaced with a glass frontage, 14.6 metres high and 60 metres wide, curving like a gigantic strip of film across the building's width. The old outer wall was now an inner wall with viewing balconies.
In April 1992, the 306 seat Pictureville Cinema opened at a cost of 1.25 million. Built on the site of the old Library Theatre, it was a city centre cinema with car park access at a time when out of town multiplexes were taking over.
The old museum had lots of objects to look at, whereas the new museum had more for visitors to do, including a ride in an eight seater flight simulator pod.
At a cost of 2.4 million the interior was converted, and in1983 Britain's first IMAX cinema screen was opened to the public in what was the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television.

in the region of 5 million. And that's how it remains today, hopefully in good shape for the future.
In 1999, the museum's then head of cinema Bill Lawrence said: "The museum started off in 1983 concentrating on photography. Then it realised the inter connection between film and TV. One of its strengths is the way it ties photography, film and TV together."

There was more to come. The following year, the museum was to have its third cinema, the Cubby Broccoli. In due course the installation of digital projectors would mean the replacement of enormous reels of film with much smaller disks which could be shown on each of the museum's three screens.
